In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
