An individual who laced treats with sleeping medication and gave them to minors at a summer program in the region has admitted sexual offences against two boys who were nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight minors and a grown-up experienced illness at the facility in the summer month.

'Sweet game'

The legal representative, handling the case, detailed the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She explained his those affected were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer program which he operated.

Ruben engaged in a "candy game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel explained, in which he would go into the boys' rooms when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings Ruben had conducted this practice with the children "over an extended period", and children had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She explained the man had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had concerns in summer 2025.

The legal representative added: "This year his stepchild had concerns about what was going on, with valid cause.

"They decided to have a look in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel said materials including baby oil, ointment and medical needles were located, and his family member alerted the authorities about his worries.

She stated Ruben went on to engage in the "candy game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"The police had not arrived by that stage," she added.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was reviewing the police response of the situation.

Mrs Prior said the minors were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so the stepson notified the authorities again.

She explained Ruben then engaged in the "treat game" in a space of five minors.
